How to Change Your Character Skin

This guide walks you through the process of changing your character's appearance in Hytale by replacing your cached skin file.

Step 1: Download Your Skin

Find a skin you like on Hyskins.io and click the download button. The file will be saved as a .json file.

Step 2: Locate Your Cached Skins Folder

Navigate to your Hytale userdata directory where your cached player skins are stored:

Windows

`C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Hytale\UserData\CachedPlayerSkins\`

Mac

`~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData/CachedPlayerSkins/`

Linux

`~/.local/share/Hytale/UserData/CachedPlayerSkins/`

Step 3: Backup Your Original Skin (Recommended!)

Before replacing anything, **we strongly recommend backing up your original skin file.**

  • Find your existing skin file - it will have a long UUID name like `0374340b-22da-43c5-95aa-05408808c714.json`
  • Copy the file and rename the copy with `.bak` at the end
  • Keep this backup somewhere safe in case you want to revert later

    • Step 4: Replace the Skin File

  • Take note of the exact filename of your original skin (the UUID)
  • Delete or move the original file
  • Rename your downloaded skin file to match the original UUID filename exactly
  • Place the renamed file in the CachedPlayerSkins folder

    • Step 5: Apply In-Game

  • Launch Hytale
  • Your character should now appear with the new skin applied automatically!

    • > **Note**: Unlike traditional skin folders, Hytale caches your active skin by UUID. This is why you need to replace the cached file rather than just adding a new one.

    Troubleshooting

    **Skin not appearing correctly?**

  • Make sure the file was renamed to match the exact UUID of your original
  • Verify the file extension is .json (not .txt)
  • Try restarting Hytale completely
  • Check that the JSON format is valid

    • **Want to switch back to your original skin?**

  • Use the .bak file you created to restore your original appearance
  • Simply rename it back to the UUID and replace the current file
